Handmade wooden spatula also known as a butter paddle.

A wooden spatula or butter paddle is a tool used in traditional butter making; it is also sometimes called a butter hand or Scotch hand. Typically made from wood, the utensil has a broad blade and a short handle.

When butter is made by hand, the process has multiple steps, starting with allowing the milk to sit so that the cream rises to the top. The cream is churned to solidify it, causing chunks of butter to start floating and sinking in the buttermilk.   These chunks are pulled out with a ladle and worked with a butter paddle to remove all of the excess liquid which might be trapped inside of your butter. The butter is then rinsed with clear, cold water while the butter is worked.

Using a wooden spatula or butter paddle ensures that the butter is pure butter, without pockets of buttermilk or air that could make the butter go rancid.

A butter paddle also firms the texture of the butter, allowing it to be easily packed into butter molds.  When packing, the paddle is used to firmly tamp the butter down so that it evenly fills the entire butter mold.

There are many other uses for this wooden spatula to be used around the kitchen from spreading icing to breaking up ground beef during cooking.

Wood versus plastic

Wooden cutlery is heat resistant, meaning it won’t warp when it interacts with warm food.  It also won’t melt or disintegrate like metal or plastic cutlery can.  This makes them ideal for both hot and cold food. Wooden utensils should only be hand washed. DO NOT use dishwasher or leave in standing water.   Can easily be resealed with food grade oils as needed to combat dryness.

Wooden cutlery doesn’t alter the taste of your food, meaning it can be used for anything edible without impacting how much you enjoy it.

These spatulas are compostable, biodegradable and recyclable, meaning they can be easily disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.

This product is made with all-natural wood and sealed with mineral oil.  No chemicals are used.
